Who We Are
Ability Beyond Borders (ABB) is an internationally focused disability rights charity run by both disabled and non-disabled people.
We are registered in the UK and operate as a small but strategic organisation, strongly committed to promoting social justice and substantive equality with and for disabled people in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and other geographic areas.
ABB has emerged from the work of disability rights activists with over 20 years of experience supporting disabled people’s rights and civil society organisations across the Chinese-speaking regions of East Asia.
Our main purpose is to support the empowerment of disabled people and their communities, from grassroots activists to those working to improve disability policy at the local, national and international levels.
ABB’s work is mainly focused on East Asia, but we work to advance social justice and equality for disabled people worldwide. All of our activities are closely aligned with the values and principles of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD).
Disability research
ABB supports disabled people and their communities to explore and analyse the experience of disability and disablement through research and learning, ranging from personal reflection to research aimed at social change and policy reform.
Capacity building
ABB works with individuals and organisations to support personal growth and learning, as well as assisting disabled people’s organisations to strengthen their operational capacity.
Knowledge exchange
ABB works with networks of individuals and organisations to share information about disability rights and related research, so that new ideas and examples of best practice can inspire and empower disabled people, their families and communities living in different parts of the world.
Empowering voices
ABB supports individuals and disabled people’s organisations to share their stories and communicate their interests and concerns through a variety of means, including social media, literature and inclusive arts.
